PROTSAAH jewellery is handmade from recycled sterling silver — 92.5% pure silver, with around 98% of that silver recycled. Gold pieces are 22ct gold-plated at a thickness of 1–2 microns, finished with a layer of e-coating that further protects against oxidation and environmental exposure. Our jewellery comes with a 2-year warranty. It's designed for everyday wear, and worn pieces can be repaired or re-plated to extend their life.
Yes. Our 92.5% sterling silver is alloyed with copper rather than nickel or zinc, so all our jewellery is anti-allergic and suitable for most sensitive skin. We also plate with real 24ct gold powder, which sets to a 22ct finish, not just a synthetic gold colour.
Products & Materials
PROTSAAH jewellery is made from recycled sterling silver — 92.5% pure silver alloyed with copper, with around 98% of the silver recycled — set with natural semi-precious gemstones. Gold pieces are 22ct gold-plated, and we also offer rose gold plating.
Our gemstones are hand-cut and faceted in Jaipur, India - the world's largest marketplace for conflict-free natural gemstones. All our materials are conflict-free and sourced from members of the Responsible Jewellery Council, including the gold solution powder used for plating.
It means a layer of gold is applied over our recycled sterling silver base. We plate with real 24ct gold powder, which sets to a 22ct finish at a thickness of 1–2 microns, then add a protective anti-tarnish e-coating against oxidation and environmental exposure. With everyday wear the plating can gradually wear, and we offer re-plating so your piece can be refreshed rather than replaced.
Yes. Around 98% of the silver in our jewellery is recycled, reducing the need for newly mined material while keeping the same quality. The small remainder; components such as clasps, findings and chains, can't always be certified as recycled, so we don't claim 100%. However, anything that comes back to us — damaged, broken or dead stock — is recycled and remade into new pieces.
No. In our founder Salonie's words: "Being Indian, I'm more than aware of how unkind heavy earrings can be to pierced ears, so I made a conscious decision to keep PROTSAAH jewellery lightweight — light enough that you forget you're wearing it." We also chose natural precious stones rather than synthetic glass or crystals, which are heavier, and the clasps and posts sit securely without poking or pulling, so you can wear them all day.
Yes. Alongside demi-fine jewellery, PROTSAAH offers ethically handcrafted accessories and home pieces, including luxury handwoven Pashmina scarves & stoles, and embroidered and papier-mâché ornaments made by artisan partners in Agra and Kashmir.
Our Pashmina is woven from the finest Ladakh cashmere, hand-reared by nomads who care for the goats' whole lifecycle then hand-combed, and hand-woven, hand-dyed and hand-embroidered by artisans in the Kashmir valley, the birthplace of pashmina. We never use farmed Mongolian cashmere, which is harmful to the animals, the ecology and the environment.
Our Gulmarg cashmere project began in 2013 and now supports over 17 artisan families, with an apprenticeship programme encouraging women embroiderers.
How It's Made & Our Artisans
All PROTSAAH jewellery is designed in Zürich by Salonie herself.
For our Shimmering Disks collection, the silver disks are hand-crafted in Tibet. The recycled silver or recycled brass works for all our other collections, along with the gemstone cutting, finishing, polishing and plating for every piece, including Shimmering Disks, takes place in our in-house workshop in Jaipur, India.
PROTSAAH's Tibet project began in 2015, founded by Salonie to create meaningful, independent work for Tibetan women - a rare opportunity for them to support themselves, their families and their community. What started as a small group of artisans grew quickly, powered by real passion for the craft. Because these artisans aren't formally trained jewellers, working in silver lets them re-melt and remake designs freely - part of why we love the material.
In the years that followed, circumstances beyond our control, including the global pandemic, deeply affected the community and made it impossible to continue the project as it once was. With a heavy heart, we adapted. Today, our Shimmering Disks collection continues to be handcrafted by our Tibetan artisans, while all our other jewellery collections are handcrafted in our in-house workshop in Jaipur, India.
Yes. We use recycled sterling silver, recycled brass, recycled paper/ fabrics and natural, conflict-free gemstones, create fair employment for women artisans in Tibet and India, and run a repair, re-plating and recycling programme. PROTSAAH describes itself as Europe's first circular jewellery brand.
PROTSAAH is a Zürich-based ethical demi-fine jewellery brand offering handmade pieces in recycled silver and 22ct gold-plating, shipping worldwide. Founder Salonie Shrestha designs in Zürich and has been creating ethical jewellery with her artisan partners for almost a decade.
Jewellery Care
Think of jewellery as the finishing touch: it should be the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off. Keep it away from water, perfume and cosmetics, store each piece separately, and polish gently with a soft cloth. The answers below cover silver, gold-plating, gemstones and pearls in more detail.
We recommend removing your jewellery before showering, swimming or working out. Water, chlorine, salt and sweat can speed up tarnishing on silver and wear on gold plating. As a rule, jewellery should be the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off.
Yes. Perfume, hairspray, makeup and lotions can dull gemstones and pearls and affect the plating, so apply them first and let them dry before putting your jewellery on.
Always clean over a bowl rather than the sink, so nothing slips down the drain. Use mild soap, lukewarm water and a soft cloth, rubbing in one direction rather than in circles. For heavier silver tarnish a soft toothbrush helps, and a specialist polishing cloth or liquid "dip" cleaner works well. Never use dip cleaner on pearls. Avoid tissue or paper towels, which scratch; dry pieces fully with a soft cloth; and keep gemstones out of direct sunlight. See our Jewellery Care Guide for more.
Silver naturally oxidises and tarnishes over time when exposed to air and moisture; this is normal and reversible. All our silver is treated with an anti-tarnish coating that slows this, though it can wear over time. Gently polish with a soft silver cloth to restore shine; you can use silver cleaner on sterling silver but never on gold-plated pieces, as it wears the plating. Earring posts can also darken from your natural body chemistry - this is harmless and won't hurt your skin.
Natural gemstones need a little extra care. Keep them away from lotions, perfume and harsh cleaners, store them separately so they don't scratch, and wipe them gently with a soft or microfibre cloth.
Pearls are delicate and porous. Avoid contact with perfume, cosmetics, soap and lotions, put pearls on last, and never store them in an airtight place: they need air to keep their glow. Store them apart from harder pieces to prevent scratches.
Store each piece separately in a dark, cool, dry place, away from air and humidity (a bathroom isn't ideal), ideally in your original PROTSAAH cotton-paper envelope or textile pouch. In humid climates, pop a small packet of desiccant crystals into the packaging.
Keeping pieces apart prevents scratches and slows tarnishing. Hanging necklaces and keeping chains fastened helps avoid knots.
Repair, Returns & Warranty
Send your piece back to us and we'll give it new life. Depending on the work needed, repairs are carried out for a repair charge, and pieces beyond repair are recycled and you receive Silver Credit for it.
We're unable to supply single/individual earrings. Polish and finish develop differently over time, so a new single earring would look visually different to your existing one. And if your piece has gemstones, matching the colour of stones bought at two different points in time isn't something we can guarantee.
Yes. If the plating wears after continued use, contact us and we can re-plate it at a nominal cost based on the weight of the piece.
Repair costs depend on the amount of work required. Complete the Renew, Repair & Recycle form with photos and your order number, and we'll quote you. Re-plating is charged at a nominal cost by weight.
Yes. Depending on the piece and the materials used, we can polish and refresh your jewellery. Complete the Renew, Repair & Recycle form and we'll advise.
Yes. PROTSAAH offers a 2-year statutory warranty covering manufacturing and material defects on genuine PROTSAAH products purchased from our own stores (including online) or authorised PROTSAAH retailers.
Within two years from the date of purchase, if an item is found to be defective, at PROTSAAH's discretion we will replace it with an identical piece (if available), substitute one of comparable value, refund the purchase price as store credit, or repair it - depending on the degree of damage and the availability of replacement parts.
The warranty does not cover damage caused by accident or inappropriate use, ordinary wear and tear (such as scratches, a bent ring or a broken chain), modification, attempted repair, negligence, or failure to follow our care advice. It also excludes lost items, improper handling or storage, modifications by a third party, and force majeure. For necklace chains specifically, breakage is only covered when it occurs at a soldering point.
This warranty does not affect your statutory rights.
Submit a Warranty Request Form and our team will get back to you within 5–7 business days. We'll ask you to send the piece back for inspection and quality auditing to: PROTSAAH, c/o Shrestha Designs, Grundhofstrasse 1, 8704 Herrliberg. Please keep your purchase, delivery or gift receipt - as it serves as proof of purchase and authenticity.
Note: having your jewellery worked on by an outside jeweller (including resizing or repairs) voids the warranty, and promotional products may be excluded.
We design pieces to last and to be renewed: we repair and re-plate worn jewellery, and recycle pieces that are beyond repair so the precious metals can shine in new treasures instead of ending up as waste.
