Garnet takes its name from the Latin for pomegranate seed, and it has been worn since the Bronze Age, from Egyptian bead necklaces to Bohemian garnet jewellery. Deep red and translucent, the colour opens from wine to crimson at the edges. Here it sits in a multi-prong gold crown, its wall pierced into small arches under a beaded rim, lifting the stone off the lobe.

Reach for it when you want a red that is truly red. Close up it is deep bordeaux with facets you can count, from across a room a dark point. Bordeaux up close, quiet at a distance.

Garnet is a warm red that sits closest to warm or olive skin and picks up brown, hazel and dark eyes, where it reads as a deeper note of the same warmth. Dark brown, auburn and black hair hold the colour best.
