Labradorite takes its name from Labrador, where Moravian missionaries recorded it in 1770. In silver it reads closer to slate, the blue flash sitting deep inside. Here a cushion-cut labradorite square with softened corners sits in a shallow silver collet that barely rises past the girdle, so the stone reads almost flush with the lobe.

Reach for it when you want colour without height. It disappears under a phone and turns up in every photo, and the flash comes and goes as it moves. Grey-blue, squared off, worn daily.

Labradorite is a neutral stone, so it sits well on most skin tones and picks up hazel, grey and green eyes, where the blue flash reads as an echo of the iris. Dark brown and cool brunette hair frame the grey base best.
