Peridot was mined on Zabargad in the Red Sea, and some of Cleopatra's emeralds were probably peridot. It is a bright lime green with a yellow cast, transparent. Here a cushion-cut peridot square with softened corners sits in a shallow gold collet that barely rises past the girdle, so the stone reads almost flush with the lobe.

Reach for it when you want colour without height. It disappears under a phone and turns up in every photo, and the lime brings a little sun with it. Lime, squared off, worn daily.

Peridot is a warm lime green that sits closest to warm or olive skin and picks up brown, hazel and green eyes, where it reads as a lighter, sunnier note of the iris. Dark brown, auburn and golden blonde hair hold it best.
