Roman soldiers carried black onyx engraved with the figure of Mars, and onyx has been cut for seals since antiquity. Deep gloss black and opaque, no flash, no veining. Here a six-sided black onyx hexagon is held by six small gold claws over an open-backed collet, so the facets sit raised and lit from behind.
