Opal takes its name from the Sanskrit upala, precious stone, and the Romans ranked it above every gem but the emerald. Pink opal is a soft milky pink, opaque, with no flash. Here a six-sided pink opal hexagon is held by six small gold claws over an open-backed collet, so the facets sit raised and lit from behind.
