Smoky quartz is the cairngorm of the Scottish Highlands, cut for kilt pins and brooches since the eighteenth century. It is a warm brown, somewhere between dark honey and woodsmoke. Here a smoky quartz pear briolette, faceted all round, hangs from a wire-wrapped cap at the tip of a long open gold arc hook, and turns as you move.

Reach for it when you want a neutral with more depth than black. Gold and brown run to the same warm key, and the briolette keeps light moving through the smoke. Smoke on a gold line.

Smoky quartz is a warm brown that sits closest to warm or olive skin and picks up brown, hazel and amber eyes, where it reads as a deeper note of the same warmth. Dark brown, auburn and golden blonde hair hold it best.
