Carnelian was the signet stone of Rome because hot wax does not stick to it. It is a warm burnt orange, amber-toned, translucent, with light in it. Here a kite-cut carnelian, an elongated four-sided stone, hangs from a fine gold chain that threads through the ear, wire-wrapped at the drill hole.

Reach for it when you want length without weight. Pull the chain through to set the drop where you want it, high behind or low in front. Threads through, sits where you leave it.

Carnelian is a warm orange that sits closest to warm or olive skin and picks up brown and hazel eyes, where it reads as a brighter note of the same warmth. Dark and auburn hair hold the colour best.
